Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

Objective

The HLTA will compliment teachers’ delivery of the curriculum and contribute to the
development of other support staff, students and school policies and strategies. Working
collaboratively, the HLTA will assist teachers in the whole planning cycle and in the
management and preparation of resources; and provide support for student and teachers in
order to raise standards of achievement for all students.
The HLTA will encourage students to become independent learners, support student welfare,
as well as support the inclusion of students in all aspects of school life.
Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and prepare resources for learning activities in accordance with lesson plans
    and in response to student need
  • Support opportunities for students to learn in out-of-school contexts, aligned with
    school’s policies and procedures
  • Motivate and progress students’ learning by using clearly structured, interesting
    teaching and learning activities
  • Use behaviour management strategies, aligned with the school’s policy and procedures,
    to contribute to a purposeful learning environment and encourage students to interact
    and work co-operatively with others
  • Promote and reinforce students’ self-esteem and independence and employ strategies
    to recognise and reward achievement of self-reliance
  • Assist teachers and SENCO in encouraging acceptance and integration of diversity
    among students.
  • Support teachers and SENCO in evaluating students’ progress through a range of
    assessment tools.
  • Contribute to programmes of observation and assessment as planned by the teacher
    and provide reports, evaluations and other information to assist in the provision of
    appropriate support for specific students
  • Develop, foster and maintain constructive and supportive relationships with parents,
    strengthening home to school and community links
  • Use information technology systems as required to carry out the duties of the post in
    the most efficient and effective manner
  • Carry out the duties and responsibilities of the post, in accordance with the school’s
    Health and Safety Policy and relevant Health and Safety Guidance and Legislation
  • Any other duties as assigned by the SENCO, Deputy Heads, or the Headmaster

Education and Training

  • Educated to GCSE level in literacy and numeracy, or equivalent
  • A relevant qualification at a level equivalent to at least NQF Level 3

Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience of working with children, preferably in an education
    setting
  • Evidence of specialism in specific curriculum areas or areas of particular learning
    difficulty

Experience in the following areas would be an advantage:

  • Behaviour management strategies
  • National literacy and numeracy strategy requirements
  • Knowledge & understanding of the National Curriculum

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Sound IT skills to support learning and maintain electronic information systems
  • Ability and willingness to work constructively as part of a team
  • Ability to use own initiative and work flexibly
  • Empathy with students facing barriers to their learning

Working Hours
This full-time position provides the opportunity to work within a dynamic, highly qualified
team, in very pleasant surroundings with excellent facilities.
Working hours are from Sunday to Wednesday, 07:45 – 16:45 and on Thursdays, 07:45 to
12:30.

Job Summary

  • Hold a degree in Computer Science or related subject
  • Have a minimum of one year’s teaching experience
  • Be able to demonstrate outstanding subject knowledge and evidence that that they have taught, added value and achieved outstanding results at GCSE and A Level
  • Have experience of teaching in a British curriculum school

In addition the successful candidate will

  • Be able to teach Computer Science throughout Key Stages 3 to 5
  • Stretch the very brightest students who aspire to study the subject at leading UK and US universities
  • Know how to support students with effective intervention strategies
